Every infantry or armoured regiment had its own insignia. The Eagle of the R.A.F. was worn on both upper sleeves by all those below the rank of Warrant Officer 1^st Class and airmen of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve wore a "V.R." below it. The Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve served as an entry point for the much needed aircrew and pilots during the Second World War.
